Effective field theories, combined with ab initio many-body methods, provide an efficient and well-founded theoretical approach to low-energy nuclear structure and reactions. After a concise introduction to chiral perturbation theory, I will focus on effective field theories to describe nuclear systems in the nonperturbative regime. Topics to be addressed include pionless EFT, renormalization schemes and power counting, Wilsonian RG analysis, inclusion of pions and derivation of nuclear forces and currents from the effective chiral Lagrangian. In the last part of the lectures I will review the current status of nuclear chiral EFT, discuss selected applications and outline future directions in the field.
